Planning 1st fete for your little one

I’ve never herded cats but I would imagine that even that task wouldn’t be as challenging as planning a birthday party for a 1-year-old.

As countdown approaches T-minus six weeks until my daughter’s 365-day-old soiree, my wife and I decided to get cracking on party planning. You only turn 1 once right? But planning a party for someone who probably has no idea what the event is even for is a severely daunting task.

Let baby embrace ups, downs of family

I was talking with a friend of mine this week about “Babies,” the documentary that came out in May that followed the lives of several infants across the globe.

The film shows that even though our surroundings and culture may be vastly different, there are certain things about childhood that are inherently the same, most importantly, family.

Recently, I took my family up north for my sister’s wedding and a little relaxation. For my daughter, Abby, it was her maiden voyage to Dad’s old stomping grounds and her first introduction to most of my psychotic family members.

For nine months, I tried to shield my daughter from some of their craziness. The fact I was able to make it that long can be chalked up as a moral victory.

But as I watched my daughter get passed from one slightly sauced relative to the next at the wedding reception, I started to realize how much I missed this lovable gang of misfits. In the realm of families, I could have done much worse.
